Birch Trees and HeatherThis was taken on a beautiful hike along the Lyn River near Watersmeet, Exmoor,, Devon, UK. Exmoor is one of the dampest places in England, hence the lush green setting for these silver-barked trees.

Terraced Tea Plantation with Horse and CartThe Azores allow you to step back in time, whether you encounter a milkman bringing his milk to market on horseback or a tea-grower using a horse and cart to deliver the tea leaves to the factory.
Squirrels Picnic Site on Old RagThe discarded hazelnut shells in the foreground are evidence of a meal with a view. This was taken on the top of Old Rag Mountain with its characteristic granite boulders.
Grazing Cattle in Exmoor National ParkCattle and sheep are given free reign in this bleak and beautiful landscape with only the occasional tree to shield them from the wind and rain.
Dinner and a View in the LangdalesThere’s no shortage of green stuff in the lush valleys of the Lake District. This once glaciated landscape offers some of the best hiking in the UK.

Hadrian’s wall was built to keep the Barbarian invaders out of Britain.
St Mary's Lighthouse, Whitely BayLocated off the Northeast coast of the UK, this island can be accessed at low tide by a walkway. I preferred the view at high tide when it looks like a ship out to sea.
Sea Stacks of Mosteiros, Sao MiguelThis pair of Sea Stacks frames the sunset for a few weeks every year in June. We happened to visit at just the right time.
Fall Colors at Sugar Hollow ReservoirWhen the water is low the rocky shoreline is reminiscent of scenes from Maine.
The Center of Attention A bike ride in Exmoor National Park took me to a field full of sheep. As I clambered up onto the gate for a better angle, they all turned to watch. The perfect shot!

Rhododendrons at the Priest Overlook One of my favorite viewpoints on the Blue Ridge Parkway provides both a beautiful vista towards the Priest and colorful blossoms in the foreground.
Humpback Rock Sunset The rocks in the foreground are at the top of a popular but steep 3/4 mile hike off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was waiting for the sunset. The best colors tend to reveal themselves as much as an hour after the sun drops below the horizon. I was so involved in getting the shot, that I had forgotten how dark it was getting. I had to find my way down the rocky trail with only the light from my cell phone!
Breaking Wave Waves are often difficult to capture without getting rather wet or tossed about. This shot was taken from a sea wall protecting the harbor in Vila Franco Do Campo on the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores
Sunrise from Old Rag MountainI began my hike in the dark, breaking cobwebs along the trail . I felt as if I had the mountain to myself. This is one of the most popular hikes on the East Coast, and for a good reason. The top third of the mountain is mostly bare rock requiring frequent use of ones hands and feet in the scramble to reach the top.
Stonehenge with RavenStonehenge is one of the oldest man-made structures in the world, predating the pyramids. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. As a child I remember clambering over the rocks when we would stop off on the way to visit my grandparents in Devon. Today the stones themselves are off limits and the site is closely guarded. If you look carefully at the top of the horizontal plinth, a raven helps provide a sense of scale.
Stonehenge, UK Stonehenge is one of the oldest man-made structures in the world, predating the pyramids. It is a UNESCO world heritage site. As a child I remember clambering over the rocks when we would stop off on the way to visit my grandparents in Devon. Today the stones themselves are off limits. Typically it is circled with visitors, but I wanted to catch it alone on the plain. This was an early morning shot taken hours before the site is open to the public. I happened across a public footpath which leads right by the structure with only a barbed wire fence between one side and the other. I was watched carefully by a pair of guards and a few ravens as I set up my tripod on the fence-line.
Rounded Rock Beach I was fascinated by these boulders as evidence of both the sheer power of the sea and the graceful forms into which it has shaped them over thousands of years.
Country Road, Exmoor National Park, UK My eye was caught by the ribbon of road weaving its way across the winter landscape along a line of windswept trees.
Valley of the Rocks, Devon, UKBoth rugged and intimate, The Valley of the Rocks is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South West England. If you look carefully the silhouette of a man standing on the left hand side of the rocks in the enter of the picture provides a sense of scale..
Wet Sand and Surf, Saunton, Devon, UKThe reflective nature of the wet sand caught my eye. This shot has a mystical element as if the waves are breaking over clouds. The three figures in the center of the picture provide a sense of scale for this three-mile expanse of beach.

Blue Ridges from Skyline Drive This shot was taken a few miles north of the Rockfish Gap where Interstate 64 crosses the Blue Ridge. Forty-five minutes after the sun has set, the color emerges from which the mountains get their name.This works well as a triptych.
U.S. Capitol and Washington Monument Although these two landmarks are separated by over a mile, the telephoto lens brings them closer together.
Fishing Boat, Isafjordur, IcelandSafe in the harbor, the boat symbolizes tranquility.
The Hurlers, I got up early to catch this prehistoric stone circle draped in the morning mist. Behind it lies the ruins of a Victorian Mill, a mere infant next to the Hurlers themselves.
Footpath to Pentire Point and the Rumps, Cornwall, UK I hiked this for the first time a couple of years ago with my wife, (pictured). It is one of the most attractive portions of the National Coast Path.

Glacial FishThe Jokulsarlon Lagoon is populated by great floating icebergs sculpted by the wind and waves. They gather here before floating out into the Atlantic. I couldn’t help but find a few familiar shapes.
Tarr Steps, Exmoor National Park, UKThis is reputed to be the longest clapper bridge in the UK. . Built in medieval times, it crosses the River Barle near Withypool in Somerset.
Arctic Tern over Blue IceGlacial ice varies in its oxygen content and clarity depending upon its depth from the surface. This clear blue ice came from deep in the glacier.Jokulsarlon Lagoon, Iceland.
SkogafossOne of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, 80 feet wide at the top, and 200 feet tall.
Arctic Crimson Thyme and LupinsThis was a brief stop on a now little-used highway. It is one of the more colorful shots I have of an Icelandic waterfall. Hvalfjordur.
Wild Geese on a Black Sand Estuary, IcelandI was intrigued by the black-and-whilte feel and the patterns in the sand. I like the abstract nature of this shot.
Gljufrafoss, IcelandA waterfall in a cave! A less known cousin of the nearby Seljalandafoss, this waterfall is only accessible through a short cave, and is hidden from the world outside. The roar of the fall in the enclosed space and the tumbling water is almost hypnotic.
Halfdome and Pine BoughsOne of the iconic images of Yosemite. It is hard to capture the scale of this other than to say that climbers on the top were so small they could not be seen without binoculars.
Gullfoss (Golden Falls), IcelandOne of the top 10 waterfalls in Iceland.
Time to mow the roof!You can find this cute little red-painted turf house in Bakkagerði village in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East-Iceland. Parts of it date back to 1899, and it is still inhabited (only during the summer months) by an elderly lady.
Godafoss Waterfall, IcelandThe Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It gets its name from an incident in the year 1000 when Christianity was made the official religion of Iceland., and statues of the Norse gods were thrown into the falls.
Strokkur Geyser, Iceland - The Bubble RisesFor a split second before it erupts, Strokkur swells to produce this beautiful turquoise dome. This picture works well paired with the next two shots as the ”Bubble Bursts” and we have “Blast Off!”
Strokkur Geyser - The Bubble BurstsThis beautiful geyser erupts roughly six times an hour, but you never know quite when. It took a number of failed attempts before I was able to catch this sequence. This picture works well when paired with the earlier shot as “The Bubble Rises,” and the final shot, “Blast Off!”
Strokkur Geyser - Blast Off!One of the most popular sights in Iceland, this geyser erupts approximately six times an hour. It typically reaches a height of about 60 feet, but occasionally doubles that. This picture works well with two others showing earlier stages in the eruption.
Niagara FallsThe River Niagara forms part of the border between the US and Canada. This shot was taken from the Canadian side.
Yellowstone River - Color PaletteOver millennia, the churning Yellowstone has worn away this canyon revealing the hidden colors in the rocks which make its walls.

Ling, Bell Heather and GorseA carpet of summer color in Anglesey, Wales, UKThe yellow gorse is not a carpet you would want to walk on. It’s sharp thorns make it very difficult to pick. See my picture of a close up of gorse by searching for it in the search bar at the top of the page.
Anglesey Quilt of Heather and GorseIt’s amazing what nature can do when left to itself. This rugged and rocky coastline of an island in north-west Wales, UK, is tempered in summer by this beautiful quilt of color.
Avalanche Lake, Glacier National Park, MTGlacier is one of my favorite National Parks. This lake is fed by water from the Sperry Glacier and leaves the lake by means of Avalanche Creek. Check out my picture by that name.
